The VetCompass Search Engine indexes the content of free-text clinical notes, treatments information. These documents are tagged with meta-data which you can use to narrow down your search. VetCompass can scale to any conceivable quantity of veterinary clinical notes.

You run your study directly in the application. You set up your study definition so that you can tag patients with information relevant to your hypothesis. You find your patients via search, and then attach them to your study. You then tag each patient or disease using your study-specific tags. The software can automatically randomise your access to the patients giving each patient a uniform chance of being part of your study. The raw results of your study are imported into a statistics package for analysis.

The Search Engine is an internet-based application and is accessible world-wide via a browser. The VetCompass core team verify each user and grant appropriate permissions to access clinical records. Anonymous access is disabled to protect confidentiality.

VetCompass promotes clinical coding of patients so these patients can be found rapidly. However, the vast bulk of historical clinical notes remain uncoded. The VetCompass Search Engine allows researchers to retrospectively code patients that are part of studies. Future researchers will now find these patients more easily. VetCompass uses VeNom codes.
